Majoring in Studio Arts at AIɫɫ, Savannah Fout recently received the "Best of Show” recognition for her oil painting, “Stuffing” in the annual Student Art Show on campus.
“I was drawn to the concept of putting a stigmatized, feminine garment in a gallery setting,” she said. “That idea evolved into commentary around fabrication and sexualization of women.”
In the painting, Fout wanted to highlight the ways that people may alter or enhance their appearance. Using a bra as the subject matter, she also wanted to focus on the expectation around women and their appearances as a whole.
“I realized that subtle alterations that are seemingly achievable naturally tend to shift the beauty standard for many people, especially women,” she said.
Using her art to contribute to conversation and popular topics, Fout sees her degree program as the perfect opportunity to enhance her skillset.
“Being an art major allows me to delegate the time and resources needed to experiment and grow as an artist,” she said. “Aside from making the art itself, I do love participating in events like the Student Art Show that allow students from across the department to share their work and contribute to a larger experience.”
Being able to develop her art from an idea into a tangible art piece, Fout enjoyed combining different mediums of art to bring to life her painting.
“My favorite part of the process was bridging the gap between my textile work and my paintings,” she said. “It is always fulfilling to me to watch the mediums I work in come together to create a more complete experience.”
Receiving the “Best of Show” recognition allowed Fout to see how her work and its message was perceived on campus and by the art community that viewed the art show.
“I hope the existence of this piece and the recognition it has received shows other artists, especially female artists, that people do want to see work that reflects their perspective and art tackles complex subject matter,” she said.
