AIɫɫ will permanently close the Dr. Miller & Genevieve Toombs Children’s Learning Center August 8, 2025 due to changing needs of SSU’s Teacher Education programs and a decreasing number of campus users.

What is the last day of operation?

The CLC will permanently close August 8, 2025.

Why is the CLC closing?

The CLC was established with two primary objectives: to serve as a teaching lab for students in the SSU School of Education and to provide a childcare option for SSU students and employees.

In recent years, the State of Ohio has shifted the educational requirements for Early Childhood Education to community colleges. Changes in teacher education degree offerings at SSU from Early Childhood (which focused on preschool education) to Primary Education (which focuses on PreK to Grade 5) have limited the use of the CLC as a teaching lab for students pursuing this degree.

Are there other factors that led to this decision?

Yes. The number of SSU students and SSU employees utilizing the center has decreased to a very small number.

New Step Up to Quality standards going into effect in July 2025 add to rising costs and increasing staffing demands that will increase the amount the university must subsidize operations when there is no longer a connection to SSU educational programs or campus need.

What steps can I take to find alternative childcare?

We are compiling a list of nearby childcare providers and early learning centers that may have availability. Our staff will be happy to share this information and assist with referrals.

Will I receive a refund for any prepaid tuition or deposits?

Yes. Any applicable refunds for prepaid services beyond the closing date will be processed by August 15, 2025.

What will happen to the staff?

Our dedicated staff members have been informed and are being supported during this transition. We are also helping them connect with potential employment opportunities within the institution.
